Baking looks comforting as ever as the cold winter months arrive in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you’re buying them from the store or making them from scratch, it’s a great time for holiday cookies, and with that comes learning how to decorate cookies in festive ways. There are plenty of options when it comes to decoration, and the first step is getting the right ingredients.
There are lots of staple decoration ingredients to choose from, including:
- Frosting: A fun way to add some base color and designs to your cookies!
- Sprinkles: Decorative sprinkles pair great with frosting, giving your cookies a colorful look and a satisfying crunch.
- Candies: Candy as a topping can add some fun texture and compliment already-present flavors like chocolate.
- Pearl Sugar: Mix some bright pearls into your batter before you bake or add them on top afterward to look like snow or lights!
If you’ve tried all those options before and want to break some new ground, it’s a great time to get creative! We have a few ideas for how to decorate cookies in creative ways:
- Candy corn glaze: Melt some candy corn in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add some milk or dairy substitute if you want the mixture to be thin, a couple of ounces per ten-ounce bag of candy corn. Stir frequently until melted and add a pinch of salt. Let the mixture cool at room temperature, and then you have a tasty candy corn glaze to dip or paint your cookies with!
- Melted Chocolate: Melt chocolate chips at medium heat on the stove, or for about a minute in the microwave. Stir until smooth, and then dip your cookies to make a chocolate glaze! TIP: using a double broiler or a DIY double broiler on the stove will keep your chocolate from burning.
If you want to decorate cookies but don’t have time to cut and bake them on your own, our decoration packs are a quick and tasty fix! We have special holiday cookie decoration packs with our signature shortbread cookies in three shapes: pine trees, shortbread men, and mittens.
If that sounds like just what you need, pick up a pack at a store near you. Or, if you run out of time (or energy) to decorate on your own, you can always snag some of our already decorated cookies. They’re cute, festive, and delicious!
