Celebrating Food Allergy Awareness Week
This week we celebrate National Food Allergy Awareness Week. Food allergies have become so pervasive in our lives, even the Empire State Building was lit up with teal lights on the evening of May 8th to honor FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) for the very first time. According to FARE, researchers estimate that up to 15 million Americans have food allergies. For us it hits home and we understand food allergies better than most. Why? Because baker and founder James Morse is highly allergic to peanuts and some other tree nuts. It’s also why we enforce strict protocols in our bakery and don’t mess around when it comes to peanut and tree nut allergies. Everything is meticulously organized and checked from our local ingredients and supply chains right down to the signs on our windows that say, “No Nuts Allowed.”
But our favorite part about running a nut-free bakery? The letters and stories we get from the littlest fans who who have found us. In the past we have also done summer tours with parents and kids. The only thing that can compare to a child smiling after they’ve had one of our treats is the look of relief on a parent’s face. We encourage others to share their stories as well.
Oh and we don’t really look as mean as this in real life. Remember, we make silly characters all day long.
New to food allergies? Check out the FARE website and the Seattle Food Allergy Consortium.
Get involved too. Or, keep your kids safe and get one of our No Nuts Allowed T-shirts from our online store.
